Social justice is a cause that should reach each of our souls after all our souls will be held accountable on the Day of Judgement for dealing justly with family, neighbors, friends, enemies, animals, plants, and even natural resources. Sometimes even the best intention-ed among us justify our self-professed helplessness to help our fellow brothers and sisters of different colors, faiths, and creeds due to an apparent distance of miles, continents, or even just neighborhoods. Unfortunately, staying in our comfort zones can come quite costly if we continue to ignore the worldwide injustices to Muslims and Non-Muslims alike.
On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, “Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]
The very least we can do is speak up against injustice against all our brothers and sisters, but if we try we can do something on all levels. First ask Allah to forgive our sins and ease the difficulties of our fellow brethren. Next, speak up by sharing news of injustices. Finally, lobby your congressmen and congresswomen. Tell our world leaders that they are accountable for their policies not just to their wealthy voters but all their voters.
